State Government

Piscataway Township is located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Similar to the Federal Government, there are three (3) branches of the New Jersey State government: executive, legislative, and judicial. The powers of the State of New Jersey are vested by the Constitution of New Jersey in a bicameral state legislature (consisting of the General Assembly and Senate), the Governor, and the state courts, which are headed by the New Jersey Supreme Court. 

EXECUTIVE BRANCH

The executive branch is led by the New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and organized into departments. The office of governor is an elected position, for which elected officials serve four-year terms. Governors cannot be elected to more than two consecutive terms, but there is no limit on the total number of terms they may serve. The Governor is also responsible for appointing two constitutionally created officers - the New Jersey Attorney General and the Secretary of State - with the approval of the senate. LEGISLATIVE BRANCH

Piscataway Township is in the 17th Legislative District. Each Legislative District is represented by one (1) State Senator and two (2) State Assemblymembers who are responsible for writing, sponsoring, and voting on legislation. The legislature is also responsible for the appointment of the New Jersey State Auditor, the only state officer that is appointed by the legislature.

The judicial branch is an independent branch of government constitutionally entrusted with the fair and just resolution of disputes in order to preserve the rule of law and to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States and the State of New Jersey.
