Program

Intro to Piscataway Braves Cheerleading:  It is the purpose of the Piscataway Braves to promote and uphold team spirit, practice good sportsmanship and promote good relations between teams and squads during games and events.  It takes complete and total dedication from all cheerleaders to ensure the safe execution of their routine and to succeed.  Please make sure this is something to which you can commit.  Therefore, all cheer related practice, game and competition obligations are considered priority from the first day of practice until the final competition/game of the season which can run into November.

Age requirement: The Piscataway Braves cheerleading program is open to youth ages 7-12.   The cheerleader must turn seven years of age before August 1, 2023 and cannot turn 13 until after July 31, 2023.

Teams:  Your child will be placed on a squad by the cheerleading coordinator based on the Pop Warner Age Matrix

Practices:  Practices are normally held three (3) nights per week with water breaks.  Practice is rain or shine and seldom cancelled due to weather.  If in doubt, please call the cancellation hotline (732) 562-2389.  The announcement is updated at 4:00 p.m.  If practice is not cancelled, you must report to practice.  If weather worsens, practice may be cancelled at the site.  Parents are responsible to be available to pick up their child at any time if cancelled.

Parent/Guardian meeting:  A mandatory meeting for parents & guardians will be held.

What to wear and not to wear at practice:  Please wear non-restrictive clothing with no pockets.  Cotton t-shirt and shorts, both of a modest length, should be worn.  Laced athletic sneakers with socks must be worn.  No makeup, jewelry, body art, or nail polish is permitted per Central Jersey Pop Warner rules.  To avoid injury, nails must be kept short at all times.  Hair must be worn away from face including long bangs.  No hair beads, decorations or pony holders with beads; only plain elastic hair ties and flat clips.

Season:  The regular season runs approximately eight (8) weeks and usually ends in early November.

Fees: The Recreation Department does not charge for the Pop Warner program.   However, parents may have out-of-pocket expenses for uniform add-ons that the cheer coordinators request.

Questions?  Concerns?  Please e-mail Braves.Cheering@yahoo.com  (Please do not send paperwork to this e-mail address)

Central Jersey Pop Warner

Piscataway Braves is a member team of the Central Jersey Pop Warner (CJPW) football league.  Since game schedules and location are set by CJPW, it is nor in the Township Recreation Department's control when that schedule and location of games may become available along with possible last minute changes throughout the season.

Protective Eyewear

It is now mandatory in New Jersey for all school aged youth that wear corrective eyewear while participating in recreation programs and activities to wear “protective eyewear” that meets American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards for frames and American National Standards Institute (ASNI) standards for lenses.

Liability/Accidents

Participants in Piscataway Recreation sponsored events do so at their own risk and accept full responsibility for all their actions and injuries incurred by their participation.  Prior to submitting a claim to the Township, injured parties must first use their own medical/accident insurance as their primary coverage.  The insurance offered by Piscataway Township is supplemental and secondary only.  If a claim qualifies for consideration, the Township insurance is limited to a maximum payout of no more than $5,000.00 per accident.

Accident Reporting

Coach must report the accident to the Recreation Office immediately.

Recreation will provide parent/guardian with an accident Report that must be completed within twenty-four (24) hours after the accident and returned in person to the Recreation office.  All claims must be submitted with original bills that are not covered by private insurance.

Returning uniforms

  • Cheerleading uniform must be dry-cleaned with the dry-cleaner's receipt attached prior to being returned on your scheduled date at the end of the season.  Failure to comply will result in a $10 fee per item.  (Ordinance 16-41).
  • All issued uniforms and equipment are the property of Piscataway Township and must be returned on your scheduled date.  Please make arrangements with someone if you cannot make the date to have the item returned.  Failure to do so is considered theft of municipal property and is an indictable offense handled by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's office.
